Going into Miami today, many were speculating if McLaren or Red Bull would be back on top. Well, going into FP1, that was the biggest question.
When we podcasted our predictions the other day, we were all thinking that this could be McLaren's big comeback, but we were also curious about Red Bull as well. The boys were saying they could see Max Verstappen coming in at least 6th position. And of course, all of us had Lando not doing well and Oscar doing well, while still seeing Kimi at the top along with both Ferraris. When it comes to Lando, I think we were being biased due to not liking how all the Papaya rules went down and how it seems like Lando is babied in McLaren. In the back of my mind, I was thinking if Oscar can look good last race and with how McLaren can upgrade really well, I just thought Lando is a good driver and he has to come out and do well.
Well, that’s what happened. Lando came out and got pole position in the sprint. Then you look and bam, there’s Max right back in the top five again. And honestly, the top 7 are exactly what we expected it to be. Both McLarens sitting 1 and 3, Kimi in 2nd, Charles 4th, Max 5th, George 6th, and Lewis 7th. And they are all so close with their times as well.
So, are McLaren and Red Bull back? It looks like it so far. But it’s only the sprint, so we will see how it turns out. But it’s exciting… even if they aren’t as fast as we expect in F1.
